Summary: Trying to decide how to secure your home from burglars whilst away on holiday? Check out these handy tips.
If you’re going away this Summer the last thing you want to have to worry about is someone breaking in to your house. We have put together five handy tips to help protect your home against burglary.
Look Occupied – Burglars target places they believe are empty. This includes such things as: a full mailbox, overgrown lawn/garden, no cars in driveway, no lights on, build up of uncollected newspapers and even an unanswered doorbell.
Be sure to mow your lawn and trim your hedges before you head away on holiday. Request your friendly neighbor if they can collect your mail, or otherwise look to have it redirected elsewhere. Maybe even get your neighbor to park one of their cars in your driveway. If you’re going away for just the weekend you might want to leave a light on inside or a radio to make it sound like someone is home.
Out of Sight – Out of sight is out of mind. If the burglar can’t see it, they don’t know it’s there in other words. Keep all valuables away from view of the street. This particularly refers to items such as lawn mowers, bicycles and even barbecues so that they can’t be seen.
Make sure that burglars are not able to see in to your house or garage. Ensure your garage door is closed, curtains are closed on all windows and if you don’t have curtains hang a sheet up so that no prying eyes will be able to see what’s inside.
Lock Up – Lock all doors and windows, double check them before leaving the house. Common ones that are forgotten about include bathroom and balcony windows/doors. Deadbolts are always a great idea rather than push button locks.
Home security shutters are also a lot more affordable these days and are definitely a worthwhile security investment. This includes exterior windows shutters that will prevent burglars from having any way in to your home.
Security System – A security system such as a burglar alarm or security cameras are another great investment if you have a lot of valuables at your place. You can even access security camera footage from your mobile phone nowadays.
Deter Burglars – There are many ways to deter burglars from your home. Big gates, high fences and mean looking guard dog definitely all help. Just make sure to have your friendly neighbor feed and walk your dog whilst you’re away!
Hopefully these handy tips help put your mind at ease about getting burgled whilst on holiday.
